A new meaning for a traditional material

The LUT 2006 project rediscovers and valorizes the structural and visual qualities of clay and also the traditional techniques with the aim to develop contemporary methods and technologies of visual and architectural construction. In the context of the necessity of a sustainable development for Romania, the project contributes to the implementation of ecological construction through concentration of authorities' and civil society's interest on the local natural resources and know-how in order to improve the suffering human habitats and of extreme poverty diminishing.


The objectives of the project
 
 

To give new meaning to a fundamental raw material and to traditional afferent skills in order to develop contemporary methods and technologies of visual and architectural construction;

Intelligent valorization of structural and expressive qualities of adobe in a sery of studies and practical applications which will be developed over a three years period;

To focus the interest of authorities and of civil society on the natural and know-how resources with the aim to improve human habitats in pain and to diminish the extreme poverty.

 

Activities carried on

 

to achieve a sery of technical and artistic experiments in order to highlight the structural and visual qualities of materials and raw materials proposed to be used;

to identify and systematize the joint methods and techniques which can be recovered from the tradition's know how and further applied to the contemporary process of construction;

to make compatible raw and ecological materials with the technical contemporary strictness in order to strongly diminish the construction costs;

to construct a documentary basis which will comprise historical, typological, technical - constructive, architectural, functional and esthetic information and references; the valorization of this basis from the perspective of the anthropological study;

to organize exhibitions and debates concerning the implementation and results of the experimental activities developed and also the social-economical results of the project;

to carry out a dissemination campaign concerning the experimental methods and results.

 
Results

The LUT 2006 project will substantially contribute to give new meanings to a cultural and practical material but also to change predominant attitudes and mentalities. 

The project will have important results for the cultural sector by recuperating clay as a material which could be the support for generous and enlightening artistic actions.

The development of research and documentation activities, of identification and experimentation of specific techniques and methods proposed by the project that will recover systematically the traditional know-how concerning the transformation and use of clay in the construction process. The systematization of the experience hereby acquired could be wisely valorized in view of the consistency between raw and ecological materials with the technical and esthetic contemporary strictness.

Together with the cultural benefits, the LUT 2006 project will contribute to strongly diminish the construction costs and to build a healthier environment leading to the diminution of extreme poverty.
